Woman, Sahara, Struggle, Resistance was embroidered by Saharawi women living in different localities of the Valencian Country.
The fabric was embroidered on the occasion of the festival “Movimientos con arte a Russafa” the festival in which “social movements propose through their campaigns and is based with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 agenda approved by the UN. The festival, promoted by Russafa CulturaViva, an intercultural community development program (…) aims to give visibility to protest actions and urban public art, generating a participatory culture and creating a meeting space between social movements, art and society. The canvas was exhibited at “En las Balconadas”, which is part of the festival.
The embroidery sessions are being coordinated with the Federació d’Associacions de Solidaritat amb el Poble Sahrauí País Valencià, reorganized a few years ago in Moviment Valencià d’Ajuda al Poble Sahrauí, to embroider it with different groups of Saharawi population of País Valencià.
The Saharawi women decided to embroider the message “Sahara Woman Struggle Resistance” accompanied with the image of a woman carrying the melfa to claim their identity and the task of women in the organization of the day to day life in the desert camps in the absence of infrastructure and a stable political organization.
The three days of embroidery became days of coexistence where entire families with children and men participated.
We must thank their involvement for the organization of the embroidery days to Lourdes, Naza, Taria, Tebiba, Jose Luis and Kaid.
The year 2018 was exposed in Xirivella.
The first embroidery session was in Algemesí.
The second embroidery session was in the Canaleta Park, in Mislata.
The last session was in the neighborhood of La Coma, in Paterna.
